It's no surprise Billy Porter slayed on the 2020 Oscars red carpet on Feb. 9. What's more surprising is the Pose actor found inspiration from an interesting source for his bespoke Giles Deacon Couture gown: Kensington Palace.
Ahead of the 2020 Academy Awards, Billy wrote an email to the New York Times hinting, "this look is all about royalty." He meant it literally – eagle-eyed royals fans were quick to notice the references to Kensington Palace's Cupola Room on his voluminous skirt.
Billy's stylist, Sam Ratelle, toured the royal palace last year and was inspired by its magnificence, particularly the Cupola Room's splendid architecture. So, he contacted British designer Giles Deacon about collaborating on a look for Billy, according to Town & Country. It was a perfect pairing, considering Giles had already researched the London palace for previous collections.
When it came to creating a regal, head-turning look fit for self-described "kween" Billy, the designer and stylist experimented by mixing the dramatic elements of the Cupola Room such as the wood, gold and statues of Roman deities to create one memorable print.
Billy's billowing skirt was complemented by coordinating Jimmy Choo platform boots and a gilded, feather-like sleeveless top. Since this is Billy Porter, he ensured his accessories were as head-turning as the rest of his ensemble.
The fashionable star rounded out the outfit with a custom Judith Leiber handbag, embellished DITA Eyewear glasses and Atelier Swarovski jewels. The finished look was a theatrical fashion fantasy fit for fashion royalty.
"The Oscars are a royal event, so naturally we took inspiration from Kensington Palace. I'm officially a Queen with a KW," Billy explained on Twitter about his majestic red carpet look.
Giles has other royal fashion connections, too. One of the talented designer's most memorable creations was the wedding dress he created for Duchess Kate's sister Pippa Middleton when she married James Matthews in May 2017.
We have a feeling Billy's regal look will also go down in history as one of the designer's most spectacular creations!
