Janelle Monae shone when she stepped out to the 2020 Oscars on Feb. 9 in a custom Ralph Lauren Collection gown! Her dress was an absolute showpiece that took our breath away with its beauty and sparkle.
While viewers certainly picked up on how gorgeous it was, we sometimes don't consider how long it took to create such a masterpiece – or its weight!
Janelle's bespoke gown featured a dramatic A-line skirt, long sleeves and a hood. Every inch of fabric was bedecked with hand-embroidered Swarovski crystals. The Ralph Lauren Collection team fastened an incredible 168,000 Swarovski crystals to the gown! All the handiwork meant the dress took more than 600 hours to make.
Not only did all the embellishment require a major investment of time, love and crystals, it was also heavy from the weight of almost-170,000 crystals. Viewers would never have known it from the way Janelle regally glided onto the red carpet, but she needed a team of people to get dressed for the Academy Awards.
Alexandra Mandelkorn, Janelle's stylist, said it took four people just to carry the full skirt down the hallway before the singer/actress could put it on, according to People.
Then you have to factor in the long-sleeved top, hood and her statement Forevermark jewellery. We're surprised she was able to move in the look at all, but she worked the red carpet like the true professional she is.
Many would likely say the time and effort that went into the embellished Ralph Lauren dress – as well as the cumbersome nature of it – were worth it, given Janelle had one of the most talked about looks of the 2020 Oscars.
We won't be forgetting the marvellous gown anytime soon!
