Let these texts stars got from their moms give you a much-needed LOL

By Zach Harper

We know that due to social distancing and COVID-19, celebrating Mother's Day might be a bit difficult this year. But you still have options, such as video calls, phone calls, sending flowers or baked goods or takeout to her house... See, you don't really have much of an excuse, do you?!

We also know that the coronavirus pandemic has probably resulted in your mom sending you more texts and many of them are probably hilarious. Just in time for Mother's Day, Jimmy Kimmel shared a side-splitting compilation video of stars reading texts from their mothers on his show on May 7. It's the latest instalment in a series he's been running for years. While all of these messages were sent pre-pandemic, we're sure these stars have received many more since going into isolation – parents worry, you know?

The first to share was Gwyneth Paltrow, whose mother is actress Blythe Danner.

"My mother and I are neighbours on Long Island," the Oscar-winner said, "so sometimes I will get a text like this: 'Can I come swim? My pool is 72, brrrr. Don't have to eat. I have plenty.' 'Actually, going for a walk. Maybe tomorrow.' 'No, fine. I changed my mind. Didn't want to get wet.'"

Toronto-born Will Arnett was the next to share a message from his mom, Edith.

"So, I texted my mom recently, 'What's up with you guys?' and she replied, 'We are watching The Crown. What's up with you??' Two question marks!" he said. "'We can utilize the pause button.'"

He paused after he had finished reading, chuckled, and then said out loud to the camera, "Oh, I forgot that you could utilize the pause button."

Lakeith Stanfield of Get Out fame then revealed his mother had recently texted him, "My home girl selling burritos let me know if you want one," complete with a photo of someone doing just that. He told her that he... wasn't interested.

Perhaps the most intense text message came via Elle Fanning's mother, Heather Arrington, who was a professional tennis player. She had some swimming advice for her 22-year-old daughter.

"Just a reminder, don't ever dive into a swimming pool or into an ocean or lake ever ever. No matter what!!!" the text began. "You cannot rely on someone saying it's safe or thinking that it's deep enough. Oceans have sand bars that look deep, but really are up to your ankle. Just go in at steps or scoot in on your bottom gently. Even jumping feet first is dangerous, too, unless you ball up tightly. You can jam your legs into the same damage if you don't ball up when jumping. Avoid both. You're TALL and you can NOT risk it at all! Never! No matter what. Love you."

Emily Blunt's mom Joanna had a misadventure to tell her about – and we're glad she's okay, but also happy she saw the comedic value in it.

"Dearest boop. Interesting day here," she wrote. "Was wielding a handheld small vacuum on the stairs yesterday. Missed my footing, fell backwards, vacuum whirled up and crashed onto my arm and then onto the whole floor. I executed some sort of swivel halfway down the stairs and nearly follow it nose first but managed to clutch the bannisters. Thought my arm was broken but just badly bruised. Phew. I finished the day with a lovely Thai meal with Seb."

Renee Zellweger's mom Kjellfrid had a health update for her.

"'We got our shingles vaccine this morning,'" the Oscar-winning star read, before pausing for comedic effect. "'Sweet dreams, my love. Love you so very much.'"

Renee looked at the camera, smirked, and then said, "I love you so very much, too, mom."

To all the amazing moms out there celebrating Mother's Day: We love you, too!
