It's common to celebrate birthdays with beauty treatments, but
COVID-19 has made people change their traditional ways.
Ellen DeGeneres treated her mother, Betty DeGeneres, on her 90th birthday. The talk show host gave her mom a haircut at home in light of coronavirus isolation and many hair salons remaining closed around the world.
Ellen uploaded the video of the makeover to Instagram. She captioned the post, "90th birthday present for my Mama."
The video showed Ellen and Betty in a professional-looking home setup. The birthday lady was seated with a towel protecting her top from falling hair. Ellen began at the back of Betty's head and moved the razor with a deft hand.
Betty gasped and looked into the camera as she felt the hair coming off the back of her head.
"It's not that short, mother, it's just taking the edges off," Ellen reassured her as she continued to buzz away. "I promise you."
This didn't seem to reassure Betty as she gazed into the camera and asked, "Why am I letting her do this? Because it's my birthday."
Someone off-camera responded, "You only turn 90 once."
The new nonagenarian then sang "Happy Birthday" to herself.
"You don't use scissors?" she asked her daughter, as Ellen moved to the front of the head.
"Believe me, you don't want me to use scissors," quipped the comedienne.
The same voice reassured Betty that the new cropped hairdo looked good.
"Another talent Ellen has," Betty stated. "What a kid."
"I hope you like it," the Emmy winner said to her mother.
When Ellen finished buzzing, Betty walked up to a mirror to see her new haircut. Ellen's wife, Portia de Rossi, can quickly be seen filming the reaction on her phone.
"Do you like it?" Ellen asked her mom.
"No, not yet, but when I wash it," the matriarch said as she felt her cropped locks. "Oh, you really cut it short!"
We think that it looks lovely, Betty, and many commenters on social media agree. The video had close to 7 million views in less than 24 hours since it was posted.
In fact, Betty's new shorter 'do is very similar to the cropped hairstyles she has sported in the past.
Ellen and Betty are just one example of resourceful stars who are doing their own beauty treatments at home while self-isolating during the coronavirus pandemic.
In a funny Instagram post, Blake Lively revealed that she was calling on the help of husband Ryan Reynolds to touch up her roots after her longtime hair colourist, Rona O'Connor, sent her a hair colour kit and instructions.
“The fact that you trust @vancityreynolds to get this right, makes me concerned for your sanity. But who needs hair anyway!?” she cheekily wrote in her Instagram Stories.
