Jennifer Hudson already has one Oscar under her belt, having won Best Actress for her role in Dreamgirls in 2007. (She picked up a Golden Globe, BAFTA and SAG Award for the performance, too.) But she's likely to pick up a lot of awards buzz for her upcoming role as Aretha Franklin in Respect, the upcoming biopic about the legendary R&B singer. It's currently scheduled to open in U.S. theatres on Dec. 25.
The film begins with the struggles at Aretha's career and follows her through her massive rise to fame, culminating in her becoming the Queen of Soul. Throughout her career, Aretha recorded 112 singles on the U.S. charts and went on to sell more than 75 million albums worldwide.
Jennifer is a perfect choice to play Aretha because of her incredible voice, but she was actually picked by the legend herself for the role shortly before Aretha's death nearly two years ago.
Respect also features stars such as Mary J. Blige as Dinah Washington, Marlon Wayans as Aretha's manager and first husband Ted White, Marc Maron as record executive Jerry Wexler, Tituss Burgess of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt fame as gosel singer James Cleveland and Forest Whittaker as Aretha's father.
The trailer debuted on June 28 just after Jennifer's performance at the BET Awards. You can watch it below:
