MUSICAL STARS JOIN FORCES WITH PAVAROTTI FOR CHARITY CONCERT

Luciano Pavarotti was joined by some of the music world's leading lights for his annual "Pavarotti And Friends" benefit concert, this year in aid of the people of post-war Iraq. Bono, Ricky Martin, Eric Clapton and Lionel Ritchie were among those who performed alongside the iconic tenor at the concert in his Italian hometown of Modena.

Cabaret star Liza Minelli also lent her support, despite having fractured her kneecap. She performed from her hospital room, where she was surrounded by family and friends, via a TV link.

The legendary performer injured herself after tripping on a step at her hotel on Sunday night. She is expected to have an operation later this week at the Instituto Rizzoli hospital, where she is now staying.

But it was Bono's duet of Ave Maria with Pavarotti which really wowed the crowds. The U2 frontman also suffered an initial setback, albeit of a less painful nature, after forgetting his beloved cap, which he had intended to wear for the performance. After some frantic last minute phonecalls, his favourite headgear was flown out from London just in time for the gig.

"Including £200 insurance and tips, he spent about £1,000 flying it out," said one insider. "But that's nothing compared to the amount to the amount he'll have raised on the night." After his turn with the opera star, Bono jokingly took Luciano's hand and bowed in mock homage.

Pavarotti has been hosting the annual charity event every year for the past decade; each year choosing a charity and then inviting a selection of musical stars to join the performance. This year's event was broadcast in Italy and several other countries, with proceeds from ticket sales, and donations made by viewers destined to aid Iraqi refugees.
