British TV favourite Carol Vorderman has split from her long-term partner. The Countdown presenter has confirmed that she and journalist Des Kelly have decided to go their separate ways after five years together.

News of their break-up has come as a surprise in media circles as they were considered to have a very solid relationship. Friends of the couple, who first met at a Christmas party in 1999, say they simply drifted apart, however. "It's amicable and they remain friends," affirmed the celeb's manager. "Nobody else is involved."

The end of Carol's relationship comes as Hollywood actress Anne Heche announced that she, too, has regained singleton status. The 37-year-old is separating from her movie cameraman husband Coleman Lafoon, whom she married in September 2001.

The Tinseltown couple, who have a four-year-old son called Homer, first met while working on a documentary about comedienne Ellen Generes, with whom Anne had previously been involved for over three years.
