He was later caught with drugs in prison leading to his sentence being extended by four and a half years and he was transferred to Maryland’s Cumberland Federal Corrections Institute.

Anthony Papa of the Drug Policy Alliance, who has been an advocate for Cameron in the past, has now confirmed that Cameron is out of confinement and has been for a while now.

"It actually happened a little while back. I’m not sure of the exact date" said Anthony.

Back in September 2013 as Michael accepted an Emmy award for his performance in Behind The Candelabra, he finished his emotional speech with a shout-out to Cameron.

"[I'm] hoping that I'll be able - that they'll allow me to see him soon", said Michael.Michael has previously spoken out about Cameron’s troubles, calling him a “"great young man".

"I hope he gets it together. He's in prison and he’s going to be there a while," the Hollywood legend told the Mirror.

Michael went on to add that Cameron had accepted full responsibility for his crimes, adding: "I can see now it may be the best place for somebody to sort out the next chapter in his life. I'm there for him and supporting him."

In the middle of 2013 Cameron penned a first-person letter to Huffington Post where he talked about the vicious cycle of relapse.

"I made mistakes and I’ll gladly and openly admit my faults. However, I seem to be trapped in a vicious cycle of relapse and repeat, as most addicts are", wrote Cameron.

He went on add: "Unfortunately, whereas the effective remedy for relapse should be treatment, the penal system’s ‘answer’ is to lock the door and throw away the key."

Cameron then asked for those in charge to fight for change, asking the "men and women who hold positions of influence [to] find the courage to fight for change because they understand what is inherently right."

The 69-year-old actor has also talked about how there is no justice with the penal system in America.

"In my son’s case, he has spent almost two years in solitary confinement. Right now I’ve been told that I can’t see him for two years. It’s been over a year now. And I’m questioning the system," said Michael.

Cameron is Michael’s eldest son and his only child with his first wife Diandra Luker.
