James Franco has admitted he did send texts and private messages to a 17-year-old Scottish girl.

"I'm embarrassed, and I guess I'm just a model of, you know, how social media is tricky," he said after being asked about the controversy.

Last week, texts and Instagram private messages were released that showed 35-year-old James asking 17-year-old Lucy Clode if he should book a hotel room for when she next visits New York City.

The Scottish teen attended James’s Broadway play Of Mice and Men where she later met him as he signed autographs. "You’ve gotta tag me", the actor can be heard telling her as she films their encounter.

Later that night the two began sending flirtatious texts via social network site Instagram, and James twice send her a picture to confirm it was him.

Speaking on  Live! With Kelly and Michael in New York James added: "But what I've learned I guess just because I'm new to it is like, you don't know who's on the other end. You meet somebody in person and you get a feel for them but you don't know who you're talking to, and, you know? So I used bad judgment. I learned my lesson."

He continued: "Unfortunately in my position, I mean...I have a very good life, but not only do I have to go through the embarrassing kind of rituals of kind of meeting someone, sometimes if I do that then it gets, you know, published for the world so now, you know, it's like doubly embarrassing."

The Spring Breakers actor had previously decided to address the situation by tweeting, "I HOPE PARENTS KEEP THEIR TEENS AWAY FROM ME. Thank you. "James also recently spoke out about Lindsay Lohan’s rumoured celebrity conquest list, and his alleged inclusion.

"Lindsay herself has told lies about me with her people-she's-slept-with list! So I feel like what I said is much less than what she's said”, he said as he promoted his new book of poetry.
