The new in-depth interview with the American magazine delves into the "tension and trauma" that surrounded Caitlyn and her family as she decided to transition, and in a behind-the-scenes video, Caitlyn discusses how much this cover means to her.

"The last few days of doing this shoot was about my life and who I am as a person. It's not about the fanfare, it's not about people cheering in the stadium, it's not about going down the street and everybody giving you a 'Thatta boy' pat on the back, okay?

"This is about your life."

Caitlyn adds: "Bruce always had to tell a lie. He was always living that lie, every day, he always had a secret from morning to night. Caitlyn doesn't have any secrets.

"As soon as the Vanity Fair cover comes out, I am free."

Caitlyn has also set up a new Twitter account, with her first tweet the picture of the cover, and a second reading: "I'm so happy after such a long struggle to be living my true self. Welcome to the world Caitlyn. Can't wait for you to get to know her/me."
