Angelina Jolie lived up to her name looking heavenly in white as she attended the premiere of her new film By The Sea on Thursday night. Accompanied by husband Brad Pitt, who also played her partner in the romantic drama, Angelina looked on top of the world.

The 40-year-old actress wore a form-fitting jewel encrusted gown that showed off her petite waist. Angelina paired the full-length, strapless number with a pair of large diamond earrings and her winning smile.

The mum-of-six, who has written, directed and also stars in the film, was attending the AFI Fest in Los Angeles.

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt play a couple whose marriage is on the brink in By The Sea

Her husband Brad, 51, looked dapper in a crisp, black tuxedo and white shirt and had his hair suavely slicked back. The couple have flown back to Los Angeles following a visit to New York, where they were on the promotional trail for their new film.

By The Sea tells the story of a couple whose marriage is falling apart. Angelina plays a melancholy dancer who is past her prime, while Brad stars as an alcoholic writer. The film is set in the south of France and is the first time the Jolie-Pitts have starred opposite each other since 2005's Mr. & Mrs. Smith.

Last month Brad and Angelina opened up about their strong marriage – a far cry from the characters they play in their new drama.

"We're actually very, very stable and these aren't our issues," said Angelina

"I'm counting on the audience to know that if it was close to us at all, we could never make this film," said Angelina. "It's because we're actually very, very stable and these aren't our issues."

The couple, who are parents to children Pax, Maddox, Zahara, Shiloh, Vivienne and Knox, have supported each other through heartbreaking challenges.

Two years ago the actress had a double mastectomy after testing positive for a hereditary gene that gave her an 87 per cent risk of getting breast cancer; she later had her ovaries removed.

"I knew through the surgeries that he was on my side and that this wasn't something where I was going to feel less of a woman, because my husband wasn't going to let that happen," said Angelina.
