Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby have expressed their surprise that Cheryl wasn't asked about ongoing pregnancy rumours during her appearance on The One Show this week. Many of Cheryl's fans were hoping that the star would either confirm or deny reports that she is expecting a baby with boyfriend Liam Payne – but hosts Alex Jones and Matt Baker chose not to ask her for comment.

Talking on This Morning on Thursday, Phillip remarked: "Sometimes guests might say before a show, under no circumstances can you ask about this. But that leads me to wonder why they might have said that.

"It happens on this programme sometimes, and normally we do as we are told, but sometimes we are naughty." Co-host Holly then added: "She might not even be pregnant!"

"They are very good on that show, so they must have been told not to ask," Phillip continued. "I'm not sure I understand the intricacies of it all, but maybe she's enjoying the intricacies of it all. Maybe she's just enjoying the fun surrounding it."

Cheryl appeared on The One Show on Wednesday to talk about her new role with Childline. It was her first televised interview in months – the star has been keeping a noticeably low profile ever since the pregnancy rumours first surfaced.

Cheryl chose not to reference the ongoing pregnancy rumours

While she didn't address the speculation, Cheryl did speak about her own childhood, and in particular the insecurities she had faced in her youth. "I was just a general worrier, it's in my nature, I would worry about the world," she said.

"I'd worry sick if I saw something on the news. I was quite a depressed teenager to be honest, I didn't enjoy [my teenage years] at all. Worried about exams, everything. I worried I was going to be failure."
