Matthew Perry has been rushed to hospital for emergency surgery on a ruptured bowel, according to reports. The Friends actor's representative told TMZ: "He is grateful for the concern and asks for continued privacy as he heals." The star reportedly underwent surgery in an LA hospital for a gastrointestinal perforation, which can be triggered by a number of things – though it can be life-threatening if not treated quickly.

Matthew is reportedly recovering in hospital

The 48-year-old has been keeping a low profile of late, though in 2016 he brought his debut theatre production to the UK – and gave a series of interviews at the time. He was one of the most iconic actors of the 90s and noughties, playing the much-loved Chandler Bing in Friends – though he has spoken openly in the past of the struggles he dealt with while he was on the show.

During a 2016 interview on BBC Radio 2, he admitted that he couldn't remember a lot of his time on the US comedy, and couldn't recall his favourite episode. "I think the answer is I don't remember three years of it," he candidly admitted. "So none of those... somewhere between season three and six," he said.

He also told the Hollywood Reporter: "You can't have a drug problem for 30 years and then expect to have it be solved in 28 days," adding, "Getting sober is a really hard thing to do." During the much-awaited Friends reunion in February 2016, Matthew was notably absent – though it was merely a scheduling conflict that meant he couldn't join Matt Le Blanc, Lisa Kudrow, Jennifer Aniston, David Schwimmer and Courteney Cox for the landmark interview.
