In 1997, Victoria was one fifth of the pop phenomenon known as the Spice Girls.
Sporty, Ginger, Posh, Baby and Scary were adored by teenager, played to packed out stadiums and cheekily pinched Prince Charles on the derriere.
Britain was fascinated and so was one young footballer with Manchester United.
Recalling the day he met her years later, he admitted nerves nearly got the better of him.
He said: "I was playing with Manchester United and she came down with my manager.
"I was very shy so I introduced myself and left.
"I kind of was disappointed that I didn't talk to her a bit more but then the next week she came back for another game. Then it was my chance and I got her number."
He vowed to marry Victoria and shortly into their romance he proposed.
The singer fell pregnant soon afterwards with their son Brooklyn.
He acted as the ring-bearer on 4 July 1999 when his parents married at a lavish wedding in Luttrellstown Castle in Ireland.
The couple developed a his and hers style of dressing that attracted attention wherever they went.
'Posh and Becks' as they were dubbed were red carpet darlings.
They frequently changed their style.
Realising they now had a large following Victoria and David began to develop products for their fans, branching into perfumes and clothing. 'Brand Beckham' was born.
Here they are locked in a passionate embrace in an elevator in an ad campaign for their fifth scent called Intimately Yours.
The footie ace's underwear line was a huge hit.
After their collaborations with others, Victoria quietly set about building a fashion empire by designing her own line.
Today her label earns the Beckham brand a £100,000 a day.
Her success was no doubt aided by the family's move to America.
In 2007, David signed a lucrative deal with LA Galaxy.
Hollywood rolled out the red carpet for them with a huge party hosted by Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes, Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith.
Meanwhile, their family was growing. While Victoria was delighted with sons Brooklyn, Romeo and Cruz, she longed to add a baby girl to the team.
When she became pregnant with their little girl in 2010, the duo were overjoyed.
David was so excited, he sneakily shared a picture of her baby bump.
He wrote: "Took this pic of Victoria while she wasn't looking.
"She looks amazing, so close now to the baby being born!"
In July 2011, Harper Seven, named after Harper Lee the author of Posh's favourite book To Kill A Mockingbird and David's team number, arrived.
"The other reasons behind Seven was because it symbolises spiritual perfection," explained the family man. "The Seven Wonders Of The World, seven colours of the rainbow and in many cultures around the world it's regarded as a lucky number."
Father and daughter are seen here stealing the show, next to editor Anna Wintour at one of Victoria's fashion presentations.
Such were his achievements in football and on behalf of charity that Becks was created an OBE in 2003.
In 2011, he received another honour when he and Victoria were invited to the royal wedding.
His friendship with Prince William came about when they worked together on winning the Olympic Games for London.
On learning of the engagement David said: "I grew up in a family that was passionate about the royal family and a royal wedding will be fantastic for the whole country".
"I haven't asked for an invitation yet, but maybe if we win the bid I will".
The couple's net worth is now £190 million. But far more important to them than wealth is the family they have built together.
David has tattoos all over his body dedicated to them and he says they are the centre of his world: "We love to spend time with our kids and that's our main priority."
Of Victoria, he says simply: "She's as beautiful as the day I met her."
