‘Tis the season to be jolly, so what better way to celebrate the holidays than with a cocktail in hand? This year, we’ve looked to the stars to see how they make merry during the festive season with some of their favourite drink recipes.
Although the idea of a mixed drink seems as old as partying itself, multi-spirited tipples are a relatively new invention. The first recorded use of the word “cocktail” was reportedly in 1798, in a British newspaper that referenced what must have been a truly riotous fête.
By the 1850s, however, the cocktail was commonplace – and it only grew in popularity from there. Eventually, even the Queen Mother had her own signature drink, the Dubbonet Rouge Gin cocktail, and would famously consume two every afternoon before lunch. It's become somewhat of a royal tradition, as the Queen has since adopted the classic, fortified wine-based drink as her own!
No matter what your potion preference, there’s a little something for everyone to whet his or her whistle this Christmas. Craving fruity, tropical flavours? Try Liv Tyler’s frosty strawberry daiquiri, a popular rum-laced smoothie of Cuban origin. Fancy some bubbly? Sample Kate Moss’ favourite, a French 75, a boozy bevvy that consists of gin, Champagne lemon juice and sugar.
