NYFW Diary: Oscar-worthy beauty looks, plus the stars come out for Zac Posen!

By Jennifer Weatherhead

Last season was a bit of a flub for the beauty world - it was all about no makeup. Expect to see loads of barely-there beauty (including no mascara!) as the big trend for spring and summer. But the beauty gods came back for Fall 2015 at New York Fashion Week. There aren’t just statement lips, these are lips worthy of being called comeback kids – deep berry and merlot shades were on tap yesterday at both Carolina Herrera and Alice + Olivia.

And since we’re in the midst of one of the coldest winters on record, why not kick off this trend right now (before the hazy makeup-free days of summer are upon us)? It’s not something natural-beauty lovers like the Duchess of Cambridge will be pulling out anytime soon, but we see these looks on Sofia Vergara, new-mom Blake Lively or Rihanna.

At Carolina Herrera, the look for both hair and makeup was aquatic themed (a slick, wet-look ponytail tied with leather by master hairstylist Orlando Pita for TRESemme, who kept using one of his favourite products, TRESemmé’s Smooth & Silky No Frizz Shine Spray, for that glossy look). And for makeup, MAC makeup artist Diane Kendal kept the models’ skin super dewy, lids glossy and reflective with clear MAC Lipglass and glitter dipped false lashes, then finished the look with the star of the show – a matte, deep-raspberry shade applied with a fine-lip brush for precise application. Watch out for this hot colour: MAC’s Retro Matte Liquid Lip Colour in Oh, Lady (out next fall), but you could swap in the shade Rebel right now for your fix.

Over at Alice + Olivia, Stila’s Global Director of Creative Artistry, Sarah Lucero, went down the merlot lane with a ruby hue painted on lips with a gloss to top it off (try Stila Acai Crush lip stain for ultimate staying power) that had us thinking of picking up a good bottle of cabernet sauvignon post-show. Her biggest statement lip tip? “ Always start in the middle and work the colour out,” says Lucero. “That keeps the most pigment in the centre of the lip and you will have more control over the colour." Matched up with a soft flicked cat-eye liner and flawless skin, this look could be totally Oscar worthy this weekend.

Speaking of Oscars, the red carpet was calling at Zac Posen’s show last night, taking over the Vanderbilt Hall section of Grand Central Station. The front row was a who’s who of NYFW celebrity staples, including everyone from TV star and stage actress Judith Light in a body-hugging grey dress with cape sleeves to Rihanna, who was followed by a mass of photographers . An elegant and glowing Katie Holmes sported a ‘20s-inspired hair style. Also on the list? Posen’s model BFF Coco Rocha (who is just a few months away from becoming a mom!), Christina Hendricks, Kesha, Mary J. Blige, Uzo Aduba.

But the ultimate scene-stealer at this show? Supermodel Naomi Campbell, who closed the collection in possibly the most sparkly red gown we’ve ever seen. If there ever was a statement gown for the Oscars or any red carpet, this would be it.
