Top 10 high street picks of the week: Pink ladies

By Ally Dean

This past Monday morning, the Hello! offices looked like there was a dress code in effect. Blush, rose, ballet slipper and cotton candy were the mode du jour with the majority of editors rocking various shades of pink. No, we weren’t reenacting a scene from Grease. The thing is, when you work at Hello! there’s an unconscious coordination that tends to happen around major industry events, and this parade of pink was perfectly timed to our celebrating the birth of the royal baby, Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana.

And we weren’t alone in our wardrobe choice.

Sure, The Duchess of Cambridge (née Kate Middleton) wore a bespoke white-and-yellow shift from Jenny Packham to present Princess Charlotte to the world. But like any longstanding, monarch-watchers, we take our style cues from the Queen.

And what did the 89-year-old monarch choose to wear on the day of her great-granddaughter’s birth? Head-to-toe pink, of course, as she attended The Royal Lancers amalgamation parade at Richmond Castle in North Yorkshire.

Queen Elizabeth may be able to pull off the hot-pink (dare we say Barbie pink?) ensemble, but for us non-royals, a muted, dusty pink feels contemporary, cool and a little bit edgy. This head-to-toe look—with all pieces under $150—incorporates flirty pink elements with slightly subversive details for an overall look that’s fit for a modern-day princess.

Layering minimalist pieces with raw edges (like an oversized gilet) with a chiffon, pleated dress adds an unexpected edge. Mixing textures like snakeskin, laser-cut details and embellished jewels pulls the outfit together and adds dimension to the monochromatic palette. Now, all you need is a glass of pink champagne to toast Princess Charlotte. Cheers!
