Week’s Best Celebrity Style: Sarah Jessica Parker, Elle Fanning, Mia Wasikowska and more

By Ava Baccari

There’s no skirting the issue for stars like Emilia Clarke, Elle Fanning and Sarah Jessica Parker! Take-notice skirts designed to flounce, twirls, sashay and glide reign supreme on the red carpet. A bevy of style stars went, well, bottom’s up, this week in a range of full skirts done in light, breezy fabrics like mesh and chiffon. The unifying feature? These look-at-me pieces are heavy on detailed embellishments – from gilded appliqués, to glittering sequins or edgy studded. More really is more!

Kicking off the trend is Hollywood’s favourite fashion-girl, Sarah Jessica Parker, who rode a stylish train this week, literally. The Sex and the City star, 51, channeled her alter-ego, Carrie Bradshaw in a ballerina-like dress by Valentino. A master at balancing proportions, Sarah kept the focus on her embellished and studded skirt by layering a navy Wolford bodysuit underneath a translucent vinyl dress and finished the look with her sartorial staple – a pair of ultra ladylike silver pointy-toe heels from her SJP line, naturally. And she wasn't alone.

“Reliving my Senior Prom!” Elle Fanning, captioned her Instagram showing her floral-embroidered dusty-rose Zuhair Murad gown – the stuff of high-fashion teenage dreams. Funnily enough, the star of The Neon Demon, 18, skipped her actual high school prom to attend the premiere of her film at Cannes earlier this week (her very understanding prom date, an old friend named Cass, flew to France to be her red carpet plus-one. Le sigh.)

Alice Through the Looking Glass star Mia Wasikowska also adopted the notice-me skirt trend in an inky, goth-glam Alexander McQueen gown. We couldn’t get enough of the sheer mesh panels along the bodice, which blossomed into a jewel-encrusted skirt to resemble a midnight sky flecked with gold stars.

Flirty-meets-feminine styles were also worn by Emilia Clarke, who chose a tiered, pastel Ulyana Sergeenko gown reminiscent of a cupcake for the London premiere of her tearjerker film, Me Before You. Lupita Nyong’o rocked a statement look that was both both girly and fun while Kirsten Dunst closed the Cannes Film Festival in an embellished Valentino gown.

Rounding out the trend is the woman who's closet-we-most-like-to-raid, Olivia Palermo. To attend the Opera in Rome, Olivia donned a sheer, gold, star-spangled Valentino gown. Fast fashion fact: the opera production brought Italian designer Valentino Garavani, 84, out of retirement to create the couture-like costumes. Now that’s a train we want to be on.
