Meghan's first birthday gift as a royal is vegan

By Meaghan Wray

The Duchess of Sussex continues to make a name for herself as the Royal Family ’s latest fashionista, so it’s only fitting that her first birthday gift as a royal is a very stylish one. While she shares her sartorial savvy with new relatives the Queen and Duchess Kate, Meghan has another thing in common with the duo: a love of animals. As the former actress rings in her 37 th birthday on Aug. 4, what better way to celebrate than with a thoughtful gift that combines her love of fashion and animal welfare? Leave it to PETA to check off both boxes with a gorgeous vegan accessory.

The organization, known for advocating on behalf of animal rights, is sending the former actress a stunning burgundy handbag by the sustainable brand Alexandra K. The gorgeous piece, which is made out of vegan leather, will be the perfect addition to Meghan’s growing roster of bags. And given that it’s cruelty-free and better for the environment, the Suits alum will be able to make a positive statement when she wears it.

The briefcase-style bag is definitely up Meghan’s ally, as one of her favourite handbags, the Strathberry Midi Tote, has a very similar shape and feel. PETA director Elisa Allen said: “This bag suits Meghan Markle’s fashion sensibility and animal-friendly attitudes to a T. PETA hopes the gift will encourage the royal family and its fans alike to embrace compassionate brands like Alexandra K and to steer clear of cruelly obtained animal skins.”

The 36-year-old has been vocal about her passion for animal rights, having opened up about some of her dietary choices in the past. Speaking to Best Health in 2015, she explained: “I try to eat vegan during the week and then have a little bit more flexibility with what I dig into on the weekends … But at the same time, it’s all about balance. Because I work out the way I do, I don’t ever want to feel deprived. I feel that the second you do that is when you start to binge on things,” she said. “It’s not a diet; it’s lifestyle eating.”

Meghan isn’t the first royal to receive an animal-friendly gift. One year, the organization sent Duchess Kate a vegan wool coat. Knowing that royal fans will often run out to purchase whatever their favourite duchess is wearing, it’s a smart move by PETA, their main goal being to inspire everyone to wear vegan-friendly clothing and accessories. Perhaps Alexandra K is the next brand to experience the “Meghan Effect”!
