The Duchess of Sussex isn't the only stylish royal to rock a tuxedo

By Jessica Pollack

Meghan Markle stole the show at the theatre on Wednesday (Aug. 29) when she made an unusually leggy appearance in a black tuxedo dress by Canadian label Judith & Charles. The duchess was out on the town for a gala presentation of the hit Broadway musical Hamilton at the West End's Victoria Palace Theatre, benefitting Prince Harry's Sentebale charity. But Meghan isn't the only stylish royal who has favoured a tuxedo! Her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana, was also a huge fan of the look, and it would be particularly fitting to pay her homage on a night raising money for a charity started in the late princess's honour.

While attending a Genesis concert on the year Prince Harry was born in 1984, Diana rocked a white tuxedo jacket with black pants and a black bow tie by Margaret Howell. While in Canada in 1986, the then-Princess of Wales donned another evening pantsuit in Vancouver, this time a black satin set with a white ruffled blouse and snake pin while chatting with Bryan Adams. The style icon paired yet another tux with a green double-breasted vest while at Wembley Stadium for a charity event in 1988.

Princess Diana was also known to wear a suit dress in the style of Meghan's theatre look, including the particularly similar grey pinstripe creation that she donned in 1996 while at a campaign launch for the charity Centrepoint. With its double-breasted fit and above-the-knee cut, we could easily see the clean monochrome ensemble on the Duchess of Sussex today.

This isn't the first time Meghan has looked to the People's Princess for fashion inspiration. She took a page from Diana's style book when she attended the Commonwealth Day services in March wearing a white beret by milliner Stephen Jones, a favourite topper of the late royal. And while making her Trooping the Colour debut, Meghan wore a pink, buttoned off-the-shoulder number that called to mind a look Prince Harry's mom wore to the ballet in 1987.
