Duchess Meghan and Duchess Kate’s sartorial sensibilities have now become well known to royal watchers, who have a good idea of what the two will be spotted wearing on their various royal outings. Both royal women have very clear senses of style, equally elegant and chic in their own ways. On Tuesday (Sept. 25), the Duchess of Sussex made her solo outing debut by visiting the Oceania exhibit at the Royal Academy of Arts, and it called to mind the very same debut her sister-in-law made seven years ago – though their looks were very much different.
Just six months after saying “I do” to Prince William, the mother of three stepped in last-minute for her father-in-law, Prince Charles, after the tragic death of Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Sultan . Taking on the role as hostess for a private charity dinner at Clarence House, the duchess stunned in a shoulder-baring grey gown, the criss-crossed shoulder straps glittering in the light of the black-tie event. Meghan, on the other hand, chose to take a more covered-up approach for her debut, donning an all-black Givenchy dress, which featured a high neckline and billowing sheer sleeves to cover her décolletage and arms.
Given that Duchess Meghan has been known to show off her arms and shoulders since becoming a member of the Royal Family(think her Carolina Herrera bardot neckline for Trooping the Colour ), the stark differences between their two looks is unexpected. Though Kate has been known to show off her toned arms at more glamorous events – like her dark green Jenny Packham design and off-the-shoulder Alexander McQueen number for two BAFTA awards evenings – on most occasions she prefers a more covered-up look.
What will make for exciting outfit comparisons is Prince Harry and Meghan’s upcoming royal tour to Australia, New Zealand, Fijij and the Kingdom of Tonga . As they step out to visit these Commonwealth countries, the duchess is bound to debut some incredible looks, just like Kate did on her first tour through Canada with Prince William.
