Victoria’s Secret Angel Taylor Hill on the power of scent and coming into her own fame

By Caitlan Moneta

Taylor Hill – the youngest Victoria’s Secret Angel ever – was only 19 years old when she earned her wings with the brand. Since then, the Colorado-born beauty with those signature Brooke Shields brows has dazzled on the runway, in campaigns and on magazine covers as the face of the lingerie juggernaut.

Now 23, Taylor is confident about her place under the runway’s bright lights. “I try to remember that this is fun and it’s going to be great. I worked really hard and it’s paying off so I can have this moment.” She is quick to credit her ease in front of the camera to years spent training as a gymnast, but there’s something to be said for natural charisma, too – and this Angel’s got it in spades.

Taylor recently sat down with HELLO! Canada to talk about the power of scent, staying in shape and the summer style essential she can’t wait to wear. Check out Issue 660 of HELLO! Canada on May 2 for the entire conversation. Here are some highlights from it:

HELLO! Canada: As the face of Tease Dreamer, let’s start with fragrance. How do you wear perfume?

Taylor Hill: I spritz behind the ear, and then on the wrist. If I want it to be a little stronger than that, then I’ll do a walk through on top of that. I put it on the activation spots because I feel like it lasts longer throughout the day.

What does the perfume remind you of?

It definitely reminded me of the beach. It’s got a bit of a floral fragrance to it, and coconut, of course. It definitely ignited those California memories.

What is your earliest memory connected to scent?

It has a lot to do with cooking because my mom is a really good cook, she loves to make homemade meals for us and she’s a really good baker. So whenever I smell pastries or pies, or walk past a bakery, it instantly triggers my childhood and memories of my mom making pumpkin pie for thanksgiving - and chocolates! She made these little fudge balls that were so good and we used to help her make them. We made cookies and she used to let us eat the cookie dough. Just little things like that. I feel like scent is really powerful in triggering memories.

How do you like to stay in shape?

I definitely like to work out. I have an athletic past – I was a gymnast for 12 years and I’ve been snowboarding since I was five – so I’ve definitely been on the move for most of my life. I work out with a trainer and we do a lot of cross fit-style workouts, like high intensity interval training, so I’m not just doing one thing for an hour. Otherwise, I would lose my patience and my mind would wander, like “is this over yet?” I want to keep moving, feel like the hour flies by and have it be fun and entertaining and physically challenging.

When you are ready to step it up, what are some of your summer style essentials?

Denim shorts! Denim shorts are 100 per cent the most necessary thing in a wardrobe because they go with everything, they’re cooler than jeans, they’re fun, you can wear them with anything and you can dress them up or down. I have too many pairs of denim shorts in my closet.

Are there any spring runway trends you’re excited about?

I love the colour yellow, so maybe I’ll add some yellow.

I want to switch gears to beauty. You were brave enough to share makeup free selfies when a lot of celebrites hide behind filters and makeup. You’ve also been very open about your struggles with acne. Can you tell me a little bit about your skincare routine?

It’s varied over the years because we all grow and change. I think the most important thing is finding what works for you. Personally, what helped me was seeing a dermatologist. I didn’t want to run around guessing what to do with my skin. At night, I do a light scrub on my face in the shower because it really takes off the makeup and the dirt from my work day, then moisturize. In the morning, I’ll wash my face again with a really gentle cleanser, like Cetaphil, then I’ll use Lancome’s Advanced Genifique Serum because it’s really light and smells so good. I don’t want to feel like I’m clogging my pores too much so everything I use is pretty light texture-wise. I also drink a lot of water because being hydrated is essential to having a good skincare routine.
