How Melania Trump made nods to Duchess Meghan’s sense of style on UK state visit

By Zach Harper

The Duchess of Sussex has quickly become a style icon since she and Prince Harry were first confirmed a couple, and there are plenty of famous faces – from Anna Wintour to Serena Williams – who agree. Meghan's roster of famous fans now appears to include Melania Trump, who's UK state visit style appears to have been influenced by the duchess herself.

From her Givenchy wedding dress down to her tour wardrobe in Oceania and Morocco, the new mom has no shortage of fashionable looks to choose from! Three of the outfits the US first lady chose during her recent UK state visit with her husband, US President Donald Trump, seem to indicate she is paying very close attention to the duchess’s wardrobe, and may even have been paying subtle tributes to her.

On Tuesday (June 4), the day after their arrival and a lavish state banquet that was held in their honour at Buckingham Palace, Melania and Donald hostedPrince Charles and Duchess Camilla at Winfield House, the US ambassador’s residence in London. Melania chose a red Clare Waight Keller gown with a cape for the occasion. If you’re keeping track, Clare was responsible for designing the aforementioned elegant and beautiful wedding dress Meghan wore to her May 2018 nuptials with Prince Harry.

But that’s not all! Royal watchers may have noticed something else when Melania and Donald attended a commemorative event for the 75 th anniversary of D-Day in Portsmouth on Wednesday. If you thought Melania’s hat looked familiar… you were right! The 49-year-old had a Philip Treacy creation on her head, and it looked just the same as the hat Meghan wore to her debut at Trooping the Colour last year. On June 9, 2018, the duchess wowed when she chose a peach Carolina Herrera dress with a bateau neckline and a matching Philip Treacy hat.

You might also have noticed Melania’s outfit when she and Donald arrived in the UK on Monday. The US first lady wore a Dolce & Gabbana bespoke dress and hat designed by Hervé Pierre with blue trim. It very strongly resembled Meghan’s choices for Royal Ascot in 2018. While the hat is nowhere near being kin to Meghan’s Philip Treacy look from that day, Melania’s choice of a navy blue belt gives the outfits a very similar feel.

But there was a more obvious nod Melania was making on Monday. She was paying tribute to Princess Diana! Her suit and hat strongly resembled many of Diana’s looks from the ‘80s and ‘90s, since the late Princess of Wales was known to often wear white outfits with navy trim.
