Designers keep things short and sweet in Milan

While in northern climes they tend to be largely donned for visits to the beach, if the Milan catwalks are anything to go by, shorts are set to dominate several other areas of the male wardrobe for spring/summer 2007.

Already the height of fashion for women this summer, cropped pants were a key theme at the menswear shows in the Italian city.

Celebrity fashion-watchers including Rupert Everett, David Furnish and Brit actor Hugh Dancy looked on as Emporio Armani sent tailored shorts - a sharp alternative to the modern suit - down the runway, while Dolce & Gabbana glammed it up in white satin. At Prada, hemlines were especially high as lean-legged models showed off the kind of micro shorts we're more used to seeing on the honed limbs of Victoria Beckham.

While the tailoring, fabric and style of the garments on display might have varied, there was clearly one essential common to all - a decent pair of legs! And guys aiming to be at the cutting-edge of fashion next summer will need to make sure their pins are trimmed and tanned before picking up the 2007 season's must-have item.
