Diary of the Week: 'The Riot Club' post-party, Tina Brown's dinner and 'Variety' fetes Jake Gyllenhaal

Luxury fashion and style house HUGO BOSS was, once again, host to one of the buzziest parties at TIFF. Taking over new Toronto hotspot Colette, the iconic brand teamed up with GQ to celebrate the World Premiere of The Riot Club which follows two first-year students at Oxford University who join the infamous Riot Club – where reputations can be made or destroyed over the course of a single evening. And such was the case on Wellington Street, where a near-riot ensued as revellers begged for entry. The success of last year’s jam-packed do at The Chase only added to this year’s frenzy. The post-premiere event was attended by the film’s director and star-studded cast, who all danced until the wee hours of the morning spurred on by the music stylings of Daniel Buckman. Other bright lights took a load off while noshing on treats from the kitchen of Executive Chef Michael Steh.

“Can you imagine having Spartacus as a father?” So said the incredible Tina Brown about Michael Douglas at her film festival dinner, where she had a short discussion with the beloved, interesting and always amusing actor in front of an adoring crowd. Ms. Brown, founder and CEO of Tina Brown Live Media, hosted the star-studded soirée with Ron Lloyd of Credit Suisse at the Four Seasons Hotel. Among the guests were close Douglas pals Michael Budman and Diane Bald; Janet and Wayne Gretzky; Gerry Schwartz and Heather Reisman - quite the crowd of heavy-hitters!

Heartthrob Jake Gyllenhall and a beyond-stunning Rene Russo were the guests of honour at the Variety dinner, held at the Holt Renfrew Café. The intimate affair celebrated the premier of Nightcrawler, a TIFF film in which Jake plays a man who enters the underground world of freelance crime journalism. It was a seated affair with an extremely tight list and guests who were clearly thrilled to have made the cut! Industry insiders, along with Mr. and Mrs. Weston, who looked stunning in a white crepe suit, ooohed and aaahed at the long table dressed with stunning red florals – the perfect accent for a red hot night all around!
