‘The Royals’ TV show to star Elizabeth Hurley as the British Queen

Move over, Kate Middleton: There’s a new (albeit, fictional) royal in town.

On the small screen, that is.

Elizabeth Hurley, 48, has been cast in a new E! Network show called The Royals, which is due to start filming this week in New York.

The show may feature a beautiful brunette at its forefront, but any similarities between the hour-long drama and the real Royal Family end there.

In this fictional (and sinister) interpretation of the British monarchy, Elizabeth plays Queen Helena, a “couture-clad vixen dripping in diamonds” who struggles to keep her morally corrupt family in the public's good graces.

The plot centres on the Queen's failing marriage with the King and her clashes with her son — the heir to the throne – and his new American girlfriend.

Created by the same executive producers who brought us One Tree Hill, it’s the network’s first fully scripted show. (They've previously hosted successful talk shows like Hello Ross! and reality shows like Keeping Up With the Kardashians.)

The Royals will offer a fictional look behind the very public gilded facade of the palace gates to imagine the private, lush, fun, sexy world of the most-watched celebrity family on the planet,” promises Jeff Olde, E’s executive VP of original programming and development.
