Laureen Harper will appear at Internet cat video film festival in Toronto

Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s wife, Laureen Harper, will appear at an Internet cat video festival in Toronto next month.

The Just for Cats: Internet Cat Video Festival celebrates the best in cat-themed YouTube videos, and will feature clips from some of the biggest cat stars on the web – including Nyan cat, Lil Bub, Grumpy Cat and NONONONONO cat (see the video below).

Noted animal lover Laureen, 50, is cat foster mom for the Humane Society and currently takes care of four kittens, including rescues Gypsy, Cartier and Stanley. She will be introducing the clips at the event.

The Harper family famously polled Facebook fans in 2011 to help name their newest family member – a grey tabby (later dubbed Stanley by popular vote), which was followed by a YouTube video of the little guy exploring 24 Sussex. The poll and the video were both, apparently, Laureen’s ideas.

Cats also played an important role on Stephen and Laureen’s wedding day. When the couple invited cameras to watch them watch Prince William marry Kate Middleton during the televised royal wedding, the couple recalled that their comparatively small nuptials involved “six people and two cats.”

“I had a little bow tie made for my one cat and a little lace collar made for my other cat,” explained Laureen.

Hosted by TIFF Bell Lightbox, the festivities kick off on April 17. Lightbox will also team up with the Toronto Humane Society to host a cat adopt-a-thon preceding the event.

After Toronto, the festival will tour to Charlottetown, Guelph, Vancouver, Regina, Fredericton, Ottawa and Red Deer.
