The first trailer for Unbroken, directed by Angelina Jolie, has been released just one week after the film’s hero passed away.
The biopic tells the story of army pilot and Olympic runner Louis Zamperini, who survived a plane crash at sea while enlisted during World War II.
After spending 47 days adrift on a raft in the Pacific Ocean, he was captured by Japanese forces and imprisoned in a brutal prisoner-of-war camp for more than two years.
Louis suffered from severe post-traumatic stress disorder for several years after his rescue, but he turned his life around and became born-again Christian as well as a motivational speaker.
Angelina described the real-life veteran — who passed away peacefully at age 97 in his Los Angeles home on July 2— as the "toughest man [she's] ever met," a "true hero" and a "man of faith."
"I wanted to make this film because in the end, its message is one we all need now more than ever," explained Angelina at a conference in March. "It's the journey of a man finding his way through the darkness and into the light. It is about an imperfect person — one who we and our children can relate to."
Unbroken hits theatres Christmas Day. Watch the trailer below.
