It was her first time ever attending the 2015 Canadian Screen Awards and Julia Voth was excited. Not only had the gorgeous star received a Best Actress nod for her role in the City sitcom Package Deal, but the brunette beauty from Regina, Saskatchewan would later describe the star-studded evening as “one of the greatest moments of my career.”
When it comes to attending Canada’s biggest awards show, one must arrive prepared to strike a pose. Walking the red carpet with the likes of Julianne Moore, Sarah Gadon and Tatiana Maslany, Hello! Canada wanted to learn more about how Julia, a former model, gets ready to shine on a glamorous night out.
First, it was all about getting a good night’s sleep before having the glam squad apply the finishing touches on Julia’s jaw-dropping beauty look. Next, the 29-year-old stunner ensured that her dazzling Cassandra Stone by Mac Duggal gown coordinated beautifully with mom's outfit (her date for the evening!). When asked to describe her red-carpet style in three words, Julia said, “Classy, sexy, authentically me.” Um, nailed it!
PICKING THE DRESS
You kind of just feel it when you put on a dress. I know what I like, but I’m not really stuck on one trend or one look – I always try to be very open and very versatile. You want to stand out. I love fashion, I always have, and especially now being an actress and being able to attend all these wonderful events, it’s such a great opportunity to play around with it and have fun.
MOM KNOWS BEST
My mom always gave me the best fashion advice: You have to wear your clothes; your clothes can’t wear you. And it’s true! If you’re pulling at it and feeling uncomfortable, it shows and you’re not going to have fun – it doesn’t matter how cute the dress is.
Rosie Huntington-Whiteley always looks spectacular. She’s just gorgeous in everything she puts on, but I love her style because she’s always wearing something classy yet sexy at the same time. It’s not in-your-face and she doesn’t try too hard. Well, she doesn’t have to try too hard – she’s stunning! I also love Zoe Saldana because she’s a bit understated. I like it when celebrities can go on the red carpet and they’re not crying out for attention. If you’re holding yourself and you’re confident, people are going to notice.
BEST BEAUTY TIP
The number one beauty tip I picked up in general from my days as a model was skincare. If you have glowing, healthy skin, you don’t need much more. I don’t get facials, I don’t buy into any of that stuff – I believe in washing my face, putting on moisturizer, putting a night cream and drinking lots of water. You learn to put your concealer on right, and less is usually more. It takes me five minutes to put on my makeup in the morning. It’s simple. I know my face and I know just to put a bit of concealer where I need it. Clear moisturizer on my lips, mascara, maybe a purple brown on my eyelids and I’m good to go!
WORST FASHION MISTAKE?
I went to a video game event once and I wore these striped Beetle Juice pants with a really wide waist belt. I thought, “Ooh, this is going to cinch my waist!” but really, it just made me look wider. I also had really long black hair extensions in. At the time, I thought I looked really cool, but looking back it’s not one of my finer moments. I definitely styled myself on that one!
Thankfully, I’ve developed my own style since then. You stop buying into fads and what’s in style versus what actually looks good on your body and what you’re comfortable in.
