Last month, Nina Dobrev and Malin Akerman returned home to Canada to premiere their hilarious dark comedy The Final Girls (in theatres Oct. 9) at the Toronto International Film Festival, and Hello! jumped at the chance to catch up with two of Canada’s brightest and most beautiful talents.
Fresh off a flight from New York Fashion Week, Toronto-raised Malin, dressed in an on-trend black strapless jumpsuit, couldn’t contain her excitement over being back home. “It’s so fun to be back!” she told us during an intimate chat at the city’s Hilton hotel, which was buzzing with TIFF excitement. “I get to invite friends and family [to the screening]. It feels like a beautiful accomplishment, and I get to bring it home.”
Nina was also excited to be back on home turf, but for a more romantic reason. The former Vampire Diaries star brought along boyfriend Austin Stowell and hinted to Hello! that she was looking forward to showing him around. The loved-up pair have been going strong since early June and most recently made their red carpet debut as a couple at the premiere of Austin’s new film Bridge of Spies.
The Final Girls, which also stars Alexander Ludwig and American Horror Story’s Taissa Farmiga, sees a group of teenagers transported back in time to the set of a 1980s slasher film. Described as the ‘feel good horror movie of the year,’ the flick bends and breaks the traditional scary movie formula through the use of smart humour and yes, women kicking some major butt (Just in time for International Day of the Girl!). “It’s always fun to have moments when you get to go after the bad guy,” says Malin. “I think we all fantasize about that.”
Here, the film’s leading ladies discuss what drew them to the project, strong female roles and the struggle to stay in character.
