Drew Barrymore's new life: 'Film is not the centre of my universe anymore'

In an exclusive chat with Hello! Canada, Hollywood superstar Drew Barrymore opens up about her new film Miss You Already, an emotional dramedy that she says she made with her two daughters – Olive, 3, and 18-month-old Frankie - in mind. “I would love for my daughters to be able to see this someday,” Drew revealed during a sit-down at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival.

In the movie, Drew plays Jess, the supportive, level-headed pal to Toni Collette’s Milly, a reformed party girl and PR maven who is diagnosed with cancer. The movie role is somewhat of a rarity for the former child star, who has made a conscious effort to scale back on her acting gigs to concentrate more on her home life, production company and blossoming cosmetic brand, Flower Beauty. “Film is not the centre of my universe anymore, right now,” she says, but admits that Miss You Already was “a film, I felt, was [worth] trying to figure out how to balance [things].”

At the heart of the story is friendship, something that the 40-year-old found instantly with her co-star Toni. “We would go to dinner almost every night. We actually spent all of our time together,” she gushes, adding that unlike some working relationships, the two actresses complemented each other perfectly. “Sometimes you can jump right in with people and then along the way [think], ‘You know, there’s A, B, C that doesn’t really work for me.’ With her, luckily, it was the opposite. We were like, ‘Yes, we got it!’”
