
Shakespeare plays that have been given the modern treatment

Michael Fassbender takes to the big screen in the newest adaptation of Shakespeare's tragedy Macbeth, the tale of a greedy Scotsman who spirals into despair after his ambition gets the better of him. When you read between the lines of Shakespeare's unique wording and rhythm of language, the age-old play suddenly has the undertones of a modern-day thriller and is among his many works to stand the test of time.

Many other actors have appeared in movies based on the bard's tales. Some are obvious, like Kate Winslet in Hamlet, Christian Bale in A Midsummer Night's Dream or Helen Mirren in The Tempest, while others, like the late actor Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles in 10 Things I Hate About You, are more cryptic.
