James Corden on how Carpool Karaoke works and harmonizing with Adele

In the most instantly adored recurring segments of The Late Late Show, host James Corden stands in for pop fans everywhere as he buckles in for Carpool Karaoke. The British funnyman and father of two, 37, has belted out the hits while driving with hitmakers including Stevie Wonder, Mariah Carey, One Direction and Justin Bieber (three times!).

His cruise with Adele in January was a viral video sensation, drawing over 74-million views on YouTube, and his post-GRAMMY ride with Justin was the talk of the town before it even aired. Here, the hilarious host pulls back the curtain on life in the driver’s seat.

James, why do you think your guests love to join you for Carpool Karaoke?
It’s unique for those people in the car. So often they come with huge teams of publicists, agents and managers. Suddenly they’re just in a car with me. All anyone wants to see is stars sing their hits …We sing those hits.

Do you already know all the songs?
I’ve just always been able to [remember them.] I’m a huge fan or we wouldn’t be doing them.

Are you really driving?
Yes. In front of us is a car, in front of that is a car; behind us is a car and a van. Essentially, we’re never travelling at more than 11 or 12 miles an hour. We’re just in a convoy. It just looks faster than it is.

Still, isn’t it intimidating to try to harmonize with Adele?
No, I enjoy it – it’s wonderful. So much of my day, so much of my life at the moment … all I ever think is, “If this was an auction prize, what would it go for?”

What’s your goal going into every show?
To try and have as much fun as I can. You can’t really think past that. People are watching us the last hour of the day. Let’s try and make them smile and feel a slight warm glow before they fall asleep.

Do you have a nightly post-show ritual?
Hopefully, I’ll get home in time to put my son to bed.
