2016 Canadian Screen Awards: All the winners and highlights
Canadian stars descended on Toronto’s Sony Centre on Sunday (Mar. 13) to celebrate the year’s best in film and television at the 2016 Canadian Screen Awards. Master of ceremonies Norm Macdonald kicked off the show by sending the star-filled audience into fits of laughter. "I could not be more excited to be here.” said the Saturday Night Live alum, joking, "We're coming to you live from Toronto, as you cost-cutting location scouts call it, New York City."

Eugene Levy couldn’t escape the comedian's sharp wit, with Norm joking that Donald Sutherland was in attendance to support his nominee son Rossif Sutherland, whereas the Schitt's Creek star was here to battle it out against his son Dan Levy for Best Comedic Actor. He even called out two celebrated talents from both ends of the age spectrum - Christopher Plummer, 86, and nine-year-old Jacob Tremblay. "They have two things in common: the love of their craft and they are both out way past their bed time."
The funny man ended his monologue by paying homage to his late friend John Candy. After much discussion over what to call the Canadian Screen Awards trophy, Norm announced, "Cheers for John Candy and the idea of changing the name from CSA to the Candy "I mean who doesn't love John Candy?"

After Norm’s memorable opening act, it was trophy time and one of the night’s early winners, Schitt's Creek star Catherine O'Hara, was overwhelmed to receive the award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Comedic Role, her first career Candy. "Congratulations to my fellow nominees, especially Annie, my darling fantasy daughter," said the Toronto native.
"I must thank Eugene and Dan, the lovely Levy men who have given all of us on the show a really great world in which to work," she said, adding, "I'd like to thank my brothers and sisters who taught me that in order to get a word in you'd better be funny." It was a sweet night for the entire Schitt's Creek crew, with Eugene scooping up the award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Comedic Role and the show winning Best Comedy Series.
In the night’s most adorable moment, Vancouver's Jacob Tremblay took the stage to accept the award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role. “Wow this amazing. I can't believe a kid like me won against a bunch of talented adults. Christopher Plummer you're a legend,” said the Room star. From the moment he stepped on to the red carpet at the Golden Globes in January, the tiny star has been on the ride of his life. From talking selfies with every A-list star including Leonardo DiCaprio and Lady Gaga to delivering a heartwarming acceptance speech at the Critics’ Choice Awards, Jacob is the reigning king of the awards season.
More laughs ensued when Eugene presented his longtime friend Martin Short with the night's Lifetime Achievement Award. "Just because I say thank you doesn't mean you have to stop applauding," joked the actor. "A lifetime achievement Candy ... Oh you should have! I'm so utterly overwhelmed by this and I didn't even know I was sick."
