Woody Allen's 'Café Society' will open the Cannes Film Festival

Woody Allen is making history in Cannes. The filmmaker is set to open the historic festival for the third time - a record for the event, which is now in its 69th year. Woody has seen a staggering 14 of his films screen at the week-long cinema showcase.

The belle of this year's ball is Café Society, a movie set in the 1930s about a young man who heads to Hollywood with the hope of breaking into the film industry. He sweeps his dreams aside when he finds love and discovers the "café society that defined the time."

The Social Network star Jesse Eisenberg takes on the lead role, reuniting with his American Ultra co-star Kristen Stewart as leading lady. Blake Lively, Parker Posey, Steve Carell and Corey Stoll round out the cast.

To mark the announcement, Cannes officials released a new still from the film that shows the 32-year-old actor posing alongside the 25-year-old actress on a pier in what looks like Santa Monica.

In a recent interview with CineAlta, cinematographer Vittorio Storaro shared more details about the movie, calling it a thoroughly "Woody Allen" venture.

"I spent two hours with Woody speaking about he vision for the film, and I had prepared myself with three different styles — the Bronx, Hollywood, and the character’s return to New York, when he’s participating in a higher social level, with dinners in tuxedos."

North Americans hoping to watch the flick will have to wait until Amazon releases it this summer. It will also be available online to the company's Prime members.

The 80-year-old director is currently collaborating with the tech giant on another venture, a television show, though few details on that have been released.
