"One of the strangest things in my life is that people consider me famous!" says Scarborough native Lilly Singh, also known as wildly popular YouTube personality ||Superwoman||, whose hilarious videos reach a rabid audience of 8.5 million and counting. Humble as she is, the Canada's Most Beautiful listee and former FLARE cover girl is one of the online world's biggest stars, and has mingled with the likes of Selena Gomez, Ciara, Mila Kunis and fellow beauty Nick Bateman.
Lilly was a shoo-in for our annual list - gorgeous on the outside, completely loveable on the inside and a savvy entrepreneur at the top of her game. We chatted with the digital superhero about being Canadian, feeling beautiful, who inspires her and looking out for number one.
What’s the most Canadian thing about you? Even though I’ve moved to LA recently, I refuse to communicate in miles or Fahrenheit. Also, it’s pop, not soda, and washroom, not restroom. Sorry, was that rude? Yes, I apologize a lot too!
When do you feel most beautiful? When I’m genuinely happy! I truly do believe a real smile is the best accessory.
Who or what is the greatest love of your life? In the most humble way, the greatest love of my life is me. Through many trials and tribulations I’ve learned the importance of loving yourself and being kind to yourself. There was a time when I didn’t love myself and as a result I didn’t love anyone or anything else either. Loving myself has allowed me to live my best life.
What quality do you admire most in people? REALNESS! I absolutely adore people who are real and aren’t trying to impress me or put on a facade. I don’t mind if you’re stubborn, compromising, selfish or generous, as long as you’re self-aware and you’re authentically you.
What’s your idea of the perfect day off? I love to work. Having a day off would stress me out! But if I had to choose, it would definitely consist of sweat pants, movies and popcorn with extra butter. Emphasis on extra butter.
What are you looking forward to most this year? Personally or professionally. This is the first year of my life that I’ll be living away from my family and friends in a different country and so I’m excited for the personal growth I’ll gain from that. I might also learn how to do my laundry in the process. As long as I don’t encounter a spider, all is well. Professionally, I’m excited to step further out of my comfort zone and take a shot at TV and film.
Where do you find the inspiration for your YouTube videos? Everywhere. Every day. All the time. I’m constantly observing everything that happens around me and taking note. Often times when I’m in the middle of a conversation, I abruptly stop and say “that’s a good video idea!” And then I’m mentally absent for the rest of the conversation. Needless to say, I’m a great listener.
Who’s the most exciting celebrity you’ve met so far and what did you love most about meeting him/her? Definitely Dwayne Johnson because he’s been my idol since I was a little girl. My favourite part about meeting him was the fact that he treated our first meeting as highly as I did. In fact, he orchestrated it and recorded it on his phone. He always makes people feel awesome and welcomed. He’s such a great guy.
