Talk about an A-list cast! Fifteen years after George Clooney, Brad Pitt and company schemed their way to millions in Oceans Eleven, a new crop of stars are primed and ready to take on the task in the all-female reboot titled Oceans Eight.
Cate Blanchett, Rihanna, Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter, Mindy Kaling and rapper Awkwafina have signed on to star alongside Sandra Bullock in the crime drama. Elizabeth Banks is also rumoured to be joining the team. The casting news comes on the heels of this summer's massively successful girl powered remake of Ghostbusters starring Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones, Melissa McCarthy and Kate McKinnon.
The film's director Gary Ross spoke with SlashFilm in June about the project and promised fans that the new movie will stay true to the Oceans franchise. "This is very much an extension and a continuation," he said, adding that his friendship with the trilogy director Steven Soderbergh was key to making the project come together. "Steven and I are incredibly close friends, and we would not have done this if we weren’t. I don’t think he would’ve wanted anyone to do it if we weren’t. He’s a producer on the movie.”
Oceans Eight is expected to start filming in the fall and will reportedly hit theatres in 2017.
