Where they lead, we will follow. After seven seasons — and nearly 10 years since we’ve seen them in Stars Hollow — Lorelai (Lauren Graham) and Rory Gilmore ( Alexis Bledel) are back! In four 90-minute episodes on Netflix, Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life has the inseparable mother-daughter duo reunited with beloved characters played by stars including Melissa McCarthy and Kelly Bishop, who plays high-society matriarch Emily Gilmore. “It was a joy,” Kelly tells Hello! of reprising her role. “It was like getting a coat that you used to love to wear, putting it on and it still fits.”
One castmate who will be missed is Edward Herrmann. The actor, who played Rory’s grandfather, Richard, died of brain cancer in 2014. When we met Kelly in New York City, she reflected on the show’s devoted fans, who Rory should end up with and which co-star truly feels like family.
What’s the most rewarding part about revisiting this character?
I’m just so pleased that this whole project happened — that in itself is a reward. I always thought it could go on. I always loved it. It’s really satisfying to know that so many other people feel that way.
Has Emily’s relationship with Lorelai changed since we last saw them?
You have to remember we’re almost 10 years down the line. So she’s kind of grown up a bit. Lorelai will never really grow up. I think there’s a little bit more of a womanly connection between the two of them than a mother-daughter thing.
What’s your rapport with Lauren Graham like?
Lauren and I chat all the time. I love her. She really is like my daughter. But at the time when we were [filming], she was busy writing books. She is one of the smartest people I’ve ever met and I just adore her.
How was it returning to the show after the passing of your onscreen husband, Edward Herrmann?
We were set pals. I know he would’ve loved doing this. He certainly was with us. He’s very prevalent in the show, so I think that will make everybody who misses him happy.
If you could choose, would Rory end up with Dean, Jess or Logan?
I’m uncommitted because I was never invested in her love life. From grandma’s point of view, Emily would probably pick Logan, because he comes from a good family and he’s a gentleman. She had problems with Jess. Dean was such a doll. But it depends on what he does for a living, don’t you think?
