When Chris Pine stepped on to the red carpet to premiere his new film, Netflix's Outlaw King, which opened the Toronto International Film Festival on Thursday (Sept. 6), he probably didn't expect that his nude scene would soon be the talk of the town. In the historical drama, the 38-year-old has a full-frontal moment, which quickly went viral among fans and media alike - and the Star Trek star can't figure out why!
With the film's violent subject matter, Chris was floored that his cheeky moment got all the attention, which he addressed in a TIFF press conference for the film on Friday. "We all have certain body parts, so people want to talk about that," he said, but there are so many battle scenes in Outlaw King that "it nearly makes your mind spin." He continued: "That, somehow, to a human modern audience, is not nearly as interesting or revelatory or exclamatory."
The actor, co-stars including Aaron Taylor-Johnson and director David Mackenzie all seemed amused by this fact. "I think we as human beings should probably take a minute just to gestate and really meditate on that," Chris said with a wry smile. "That in this Western society, this puritanical society, to show people making love, to show what we all have, is somehow a Google alert. It's a trip."
"I mean, have you seen Hereditary?" he added as the audience laughed.
Outlaw King tells the tale of Scotland's Robert the Bruce (played by Chris), a renowned 14th-century warrior made king and then exiled by the English only to return to reclaim his throne alongside a band of outlaws. The film is available to steam on Netflix starting Nov. 9, 2018.
