The Queen makes Charles the Prince of Wales in striking new scene from ‘The Crown’

For the past two years, Netflix’s critically acclaimed series The Crown has been expertly and emotionally bringing to life parts of the Royal Family’s past in a way fans have never experienced. As the world prepares to welcome an entirely new cast for the show’s third season, new photos from set – featuring Olivia Coleman as the Queen , Josh O’Connor as Prince Charles and Tobias Menzies as Prince Philip – show one of the family’s most epic historical moments strikingly recreated for the small screen.

Looking strikingly like their real-life royal counterparts, Olivia smiles brightly as Josh waves to the crowd after receiving his crown and becoming the Prince of Wales. The celebrated actress, who took over from Claire Foy , donned a gold dress and matching hat, very similar to the one the Queen actually wore for this momentous investiture in 1958. Josh, wearing a lavish cape and crown while holding a sceptre, stands beside a dapper-looking Tobias as Prince Charles, decked out in his military uniform.

The Sunday Times reported that the third season is set to cover “the Wilson era,” meaning it will take place between 1964 and 1976, when Harold Wilson was in office. However, Vanity Fair has said the season will begin in the 1970s, right around when Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall began dating. Their romance ended when Charles left to serve in the Royal Navy, and Camilla moved on to marry cavalry officer Andrew Parker Bowles.

While no exact release date is known yet, fans are hoping to see this second era of British royal life come to life in early 2019. Joining the stacked cast is Helena Bonham Carter , who’s taking over from Vanessa Kirby as Princess Margaret , as well as Ben Daniel as Lord Snowdon, Emerald Fennel as the Duchess of Cornwall, Erin Doherty as Princess Anne and Marion Bailey as the Queen Mother.
