How Margot Robbie's 3:45 am call time brought her closer to her character in Mary, Queen of Scots

By Meaghan Wray

It’s not easy being Queen, and Margot Robbie has a 3:45 am wake-up call to prove it! Starring alongside Saoirse Ronan in the highly anticipated film Mary Queen of Scots (in theatres Dec. 7), the blond bombshell had to turn herself into a morning person to transform into Queen Elizabeth I – but, as she told Ellen DeGeneres on Friday, it couldn’t have been more helpful when it came to getting into character.

The Australian actress, who was nominated for an Oscar this year for her role in I, Tonya, opened up about the practice of patience that came with every shoot day. “It was a 3:45 am call every day, which is not good. I’m not a morning person,” she said while appearing on the Ellen DeGeneres Show. “But that’s apparently how long it took for Queen Elizabeth to get ready, so it kind of worked for the character.”

Though the early mornings aren’t ideal for the 28-year-old leading lady, she does have quite a bit of experience with prosthetics, sharing that she’d often help transform her friends to celebrate Halloween. The award-winning star hilariously showed off her skills on the show – except with Ellen doing all the handy work while Margot reads off a teleprompter!

Fans of the actress and those eagerly waiting to catch the film are likely familiar with Margot’s jaw-dropping transformation. She trades in her beautiful blond hair for a red, tightly curled wig, gradually caking her face with more white makeup throughout the film mirroring Elizabeth’s attempt to cover up facial scarring from small pox.

The exciting drama follows royal cousins Mary, Queen of Scots, played by Saoirse, and Queen Elizabeth I as they go from allies to rivals and ultimately come head to head for the crown. Mary’s attempts to overthrow her cousin land her in prison before ultimately facing execution, as history goes.
