Jonathan Van Ness reflects on his starriest encounters and the secret to his famous mane

By Shinan Govani

In just one year (and two binge-worthy seasons), TV's Queer Eye emerged as a 2018 pop-culture phenomenon – thanks in no small part to Jonathan Van Ness. He's Mr. Positivity on Netflix's runaway hit – and the one member of the Fab 5 who can give you just the right tips on skin care and a face-framing haircut! Lately – and perhaps not surprisingly – the irrepressible 31-year-old has been dabbling in comedy, too.

"It was amazing," Jonathan tells HELLO! Canada about the recent dream come true of becoming a comedian, courtesy of Hotels.com. In September, he kicked off a 10-night US comedy tour, which generated a docu-style series on the travel website's YouTube channel. "I didn't know about timing, or delivery," he said of the "trial by error" approach. "I had to figure it out."

We caught up with Jonathan to talk celebrity fans, his furry friends, morning rituals and the secret to caring for his signature hair.

A YEAR TO REMEMBER

Sitting next to Judith Light and Tracee Ellis Ross at the Emmys, immediately behind Jim Carrey, watching Betty White deliver her Lifetime Achievement speech ... there were so many 'What is going on?!' moments. It's, like, Simone Biles [the American Olympic gymnast] liked one of my tweets the other day – and I almost had a nervous breakdown! I am always having massive epiphanies where I realize I have zero chill.

THAT FAMOUS MANE

The secret to my hair is not over-washing! That is it, really. It's what gives it a shine. Over-washing is the easiest way to dull it out. [He also swears by a Shu Uemura primer called Wonder Worker.]

HAIRDRESSER AS PSYCHOLOGIST

For sure, there is something to that! The relationship that you have, everyone has, with themselves, looking in the mirror – and then you are inviting this person into that ... Add to that: You are usually very relaxed [in the hairdresser's chair], and it is a very communicative experience.

CAT DADDY

My 13-year-old cat, Bug, died earlier this year, which was obviously devastating. But I have adopted two new cats – one is called Bug the 2nd and the other is Liza Meow-nelli.

YOGA EVERY MORNING

I like to think of yoga as a kind of moving meditation. My favourite is Vinyasa [a style defined by fluid, movement-intensive practices].

GAME OF THRONES BUFF

My favourite character is the one who I like to refer to as Lena Dunham – Queen Yara Greyjoy. I would not mind her coming from nowhere, and just slaying it [in the upcoming final season]!

CO-STAR ANTONI'S NEW NYC RESTO

I have been [to Village Den], yes. It's great! He cooks for me all the time, too.
