Everything you need to know about the 2019 Oscars

By Sarah Walker

Hollywood’s most star-studded and glamorous awards show is set to happen on Sunday (Feb. 24), and we have all of the details on where to watch the show, the red carpet and who's up for one of the prestigious trophies!

How to watch the Oscars

Entertainment Tonight will air live on CTV at 8 p.m. EST on Sunday, Feb. 24. There are limited options to view the show online or through streaming, unless you pay for access to some sort of online service like Hulu with Live TV or YouTube TV. On the plus side, CNET notes most streaming providers offer a free seven-day trial period.

When does the red carpet start?

Red carpet coverage of the event starts at 1 p.m. EST on E!, though most stars won’t actually make an appearance at the event until around 5:30 p.m. EST. If you don’t have cable, you can check out the Academy’s red carpet show on Twitter, or you can live-stream snippets through various cable providers.

Who’s hosting

For the first time since 1989, the Academy Awards show will go host-less. The original host, Kevin Hart, stepped down in December. Rumours abound about who will take the stage to emcee the event, the current front-runner being Whoopi Goldberg. The View host has been noticeably absent from the talk show, which has sent the rumour mill into overdrive.

Joy Behar, Whoopi’s co-host, has been quick to shutdown the tall tales, though. “Whoopi’s still out. She’s not feeling well. And there are all these conspiracy theories that she’s not really sick. She’s secretly preparing to host the Oscars,” Behar said during Thursday’s episode of The View. “But she’s actually recovering from pneumonia. That’s what she had, it’s a serious thing. So I don’t think she’s going to be able to host the Oscars and I’m sure she’s very disappointed.”

Either way, the telecast promises to be packed with a ton of A-list appearances, from Brie Larson to Chris Evans and Helen Mirren to Michael B. Jordan. The best picture nominees will be presented by Serena Williams, Diego Luna, Trevor Noah, chef José Andrés, Congressman John Lewis and Barbra Streisand.

The Favourite is up for ten awards!

All of the nominees

On the Canadian front, three of the animated shorts are by Canucks: Bao is helmed by Toronto-raised Domee Shi, Animal Behaviour by Vancouver's David Fine and Alison Snowden, and Canadian-born director Trevor Jimenez worked on Weekends. Domee also happens to be the first female director to helm a Pixar short, making history with her nod.

Canadians also feature in sound mixing ( Paul Massey, Bohemian Rhapsody), set decoration (Gordon Sim, Mary Poppins Returns) and live action short (Jeremy Comte for Fauve and Marianne Farley for Marguerite).
