Schitt's Creek, Anne with an E, Cardinal and the Baroness von Sketch Show have all received critical praise and devoted followings since they were first aired on TV – and they were all honoured at the 2020 Canadian Screen Awards on May 27.
The shows have all had their season finales or will soon be in their final seasons – as is the case with Baroness – and they took home the lion's share of TV drama and comedy awards at the event.
Mystery series Cardinal picked up seven awards, including best drama series, best lead actor a drama series for Billy Campbell, best lead actress in a drama series for Karine Vanasse and best writing for a drama series.
Schitt's Creek didn't win all 26 awards for which it was nominated -– a record – but it wasn't far behind, winning best comedy series and taking home five other awards. Canadian legends Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara also received the awards for best lead actor in a comedy and best lead actress in a comedy. It was a beautiful sendoff for Dan Levy's simultaneously uplifting and very funny hit show, which has developed a cult following both here and in the United States.
Anne with an E, which aired its final episode last November, won five awards. The Baroness von Sketch Show also picked up the same number of trophies. Stunningly, it won every award for which it was nominated.
Jason Priestley's new show, Private Eyes, and beloved Murdoch Mysteries also tied for the Golden Screen Award for TV Drama/Comedy. The shows' devoted audiences helped them take home that award, which is given to the most watched TV program in the past year.
Earlier this week, awards were handed out in several non-fiction categories, including Best Host, Web Program/Series. Melissa Grelo of The Social won that award for her 2020 Bell Let's Talk Live program, which encouraged Canadians to speak about their mental health. The Social itself was also named Best Talk Program or Series.
The Canadian Screen Awards were originally to be held in March, but were postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. Organizers opted to make the event digital only, and have been revealing the 2020 winners in live streams this week.
