'The Crown,' 'Chernobyl' and 'Fleabag' earn BAFTA TV Awards 2020 nominations
By Heather Cichowski
The BAFTA TV Awards 2020 nominations are in, and The Crown, Killing Eve, Fleabag and Chernobyl are some of the television shows up for prizes this year.
Chernobyl, the historical drama about the nuclear disaster at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant near the city of Pripyat, leads the pack with 14 nominations.
The latest season of Netflix's The Crown was the second most nominated show, receiving seven nods. These included nominations in the supporting actor and actress categories for Josh O'Connor as a young Prince Charles and for Helena Bonham Carter in her role as Princess Margaret. It's a special moment for Josh because the actor was named one of BAFTA’s Breakthrough Brits 2017.
Fleabag was another popular show, earning six BAFTA TV Awards nominations, including for creator and star Phoebe Waller-Bridge's performance. The show tied with Giri/Haji for the third most nominated show with six nominations apiece. The latter is a Netflix crime drama that explores a murder across London and Tokyo.
Other highlights include a leading actress nomination for Killing Eve's Jodie Comer and one for 84-year-old Glenda Jackson of Elizabeth Is Missing. Chernobyl's Jared Harris and Takehiro Hira of Giri/Haji are both recognized in the Leading Actor category.
Fans will likely be surprised to see that Olivia Colman did not earn a nomination for her role as Queen Elizabeth II in the third season of The Crown. Fleabag's Andrew Scott was also snubbed for his role as Hot Priest.
