Films starring Kate Winslet, Saoirse Ronan and Idris Elba will be among those screened at this year's Toronto International Film Festival, which will be a "hybrid" festival featuring in-person and digital events.
The coronavirus pandemic has heavily affected the entertainment industry and TIFF 2020 will be no exception. Organizers have announced TIFF 2020, which will run Sept. 10 to 19, will screen only 50 feature films this year, which is much lower than the 250 that are normally part of the annual festival. This year's instalment will also be a mix of in-person and digital events such as drive-in screenings and virtual red carpets. Any in-person events will follow health recommendations from health officials in Toronto and Ontario.
Physical and socially-distanced screenings will be held for the first five days of the event, while digital film premieres, talks and events will be held throughout the full 10 days. Tickets go on sale shortly.
"Our teams have had to think everything an open our minds to new ideas," Cameron Bailey, TIFF's Artistic Director and Co-Head, said in a statement. "We have listened to this year's urgent calls for greater representation of underrepresented voices. You'll see that this year at the Festival. And we have watched as audiences have embraced cinema's ability to transport them through screens of all sizes. You'll see that, too.
"We're excited to present thoughtful, high-impact programming this September that reflects our belief that there's no stopping great storytelling."
Kate and Saoirse's Ammonite will be among titles that will be featured at TIFF this year, as will Concrete Cowboys, starring Idris. Bruised, Halle Berry's directorial debut, will also be featured.
Ava DuVernay, Taika Waititi, Nicole Kidman, Martin Scorsese, Alfonso Cuarón, Tantoo Cardinal, Riz Ahmed, Rian Johnson, Atom Egoyan, Priyanka Chopra, Viggo Mortensen, David Oyelowo, Lulu Wang, Rosamund Pike, Sarah Gadon, Denis Villeneuve and many other stars and filmmakers will also serve as TIFF Ambassadors this year.
