According to reports, Richard Gere, who song-and-danced his way through the Oscar-winning hit film Chicago, may be taking his musical talents to the West End stage.

The Daily Express newspaper has revealed that the Pretty Woman star has been handpicked by Andrew Lloyd Webber to fill the role of Captain Von Trapp – the father who falls in love with the governess of his seven children during the Nazi invasion – in a London production of The Sound Of Music.

Fifty-year-old Richard and the famed music empressario apparently discussed the proposition when they crossed paths at the recent Giorgio Armani exhibition in London. The actor, currently shooting another fancy-footing film, Shall We Dance? with Jennifer Lopez, is said to be "very interested" in stepping into the part.

And it was during another high profile event that the star made plans with yet another big name – the Prince of Wales.

Attending the Prince's Trust Fashion Rocks extravaganza this week, Richard offered his services to the organisation, telling charity director Tom Shebbeare he'd "do anything" to help. "Good man," Prince Charles reportedly said as he patted the Hollywood star on the back in appreciation. "Good man."
