Grammy’s Blog Post: The Winner's Circle at the Grammy Awards

By Ally Dean

In the award show family, the Grammys is the edgy younger sister. Regal couture gowns and ladylike silhouettes may be a staple at the Oscars or Golden Globes, but for music’s biggest night, the style direction is about having fun and making a statement. After all, this is a place where costume-like dressing is not only accepted, but also encouraged. This year however, looks were decidedly more subdued (Madonna’s Givenchy matador look excluded) and three distinct trends emerged.

“You got the sheer panel memo too,” Kat Graham joked to Giuliana Rancic on the red carpet. In addition to the E! News host, it seems several celebrities got translucent marching orders. From Iggy Azalea’s Armani Privé dress to Jessie J’s Ralph and Russo stunner, this daring trend was a knock-out on the red carpet. My most notable peek-a-boo? Chrissy Teigen’s revealing Gucci gown with daring cut-outs that may terrify us mere mortals but on the Sports Illustrated swimsuit model looked resplendent. (Even at the end of the night when she and hubby John Legend got locked out of their hotel room. Don’t believe me? Check Instagram.)

Giving the revealing panels a run for sartorial trend of the night were the chandelier-like glittering dresses worn by stars like Rita Ora (Prada), Katy Perry (Zuhair Murad) and Kim Kardashian (Jean Paul Gaultier). Unlike previous years – when oversized jewels and glittering accessories were the must-do on the red carpet – this year stars kept jewelry to a minimum and preferred to wear their bling on the gowns.

Rounding out my standouts from the night was the laid-back approach celebrities took when it came to their beauty looks. Miley Cyrus, Nicki Minaj and Rihanna all adopted the less-is-more beauty philosophy when it came to hair and makeup. Matte skin, subtle highlight, barely-there contours and groomed brows dominated this makeup trend while hair was characterized by subtle bends, loose waves and simple blowouts. You know a trend is officially a “thing” when Queen Bey (Miss, I-woke-up-like-this herself) hits the carpet in a barley-there beauty look. What can I say, she’s #flawless.
