Hollywood’s best, from Marilyn Monroe to Gwen Stefani, love to stain their lips as red as the carpets they walk down.
A bold red lip is a must-have in any woman’s beauty arsenal but can be tricky to master. Toronto-based makeup artist Lucky Bromhead says that the key to perfecting crimson coolness is to apply the lip product before you buy it - “I always say a red lipstick is like a good bra, you have to try it on.”
When working with clients, Lucky doesn’t adhere to the philosophy that you must stick to seasonal trends. Instead, she says that the kind of red lip you wear “really depends on you and how you’re carrying it off and what your personal style is.”

Think redheads and fair skin can’t rock a red lip? Ferme la bouche! “Everyone can pull it off, you just have to find the one you feel comfortable in,” says Lucky. She recommends wearing lipstick for a few days in order to get used to it.
If you’ve been mesmerized by the mouths of Taylor Swift, Adele and Rihanna for more than just their stellar voices and are ready to embrace rouge lips, Lucky suggests starting small by using a tinted lip balm and then “couple that with a red lip liner. This way you can incorporate little bits of red and see how daring you become with it.”
Before long you might discover you’re ready for a full red lip to rival Angelina Jolie’s flawless pout. Next up? Experiment with lip glosses, matte lipsticks and a huge range of reds in order to find the perfect hue.
