One of the world’s most iconic beauty brands, Max Factor, is celebrating its 80th birthday by making Marilyn Monroe its new global brand ambassador.
Though the actress formerly known as Norma Jeane passed away more than 50 years ago, the brand decided to place the blond bombshell at the centre of its new ad campaigns because the late film star’s look continues to define glamour.
“Marilyn made the sultry red lip, creamy skin and dramatically lined eyes the most famous beauty look of the 1940s and it’s a look that continues to dominate the beauty and fashion industry,” said Max Factor’s Global Creative Design Director Pat McGrath in a press release.
The advertisements, which are slated to appear in magazines and on television on Jan. 6, will highlight the role that the beauty brand played in transforming the Some Like It Hot star from Norma to Marilyn. The actress began using the company’s products back in the early ’40s when it had an outpost in Hollywood.
"Through expert diagnosis and makeup artistry, Norma Jeane’s facial features were pulled out and dramatized through makeup. Her skin was creamy and flawless, the shape of her eyes was elongated through clever use of eyeliner and her lips were accentuated with a sultry red shade, becoming the key focal point of the entire look," says Pat.

Some of the products that The Seven Year Itch star loved are even in use today, including Ruby Tuesday lip shade, which was inspired by one of Marilyn’s favourite lipsticks.
“[It] continues to be one of the most popular shades for both make-up artists and real women. It’s the ultimate glamorous red,” adds Pat.
Though Marilyn died at the age of 36 in 1962, her estate continues to profit off of her likeness. Forbes dubbed her the sixth highest-earning dead celebrity in 2014, and in 2011, Dior used the star in its ads for its J’Adore fragrance. In 2013, Chanel made her the face of Chanel No.5.
